Searching and indication in the real world

Even if a dog learns a clean indication in just a week of short daily sessions, the real world tells a different story. Outdoor searches affect indication quality: distance, search duration, temperature, humidity, contamination levels and track difficulty all influence focus. The more fatigue and distraction, the less precise the indication becomes.

Scent profile

Learn how to build a reliable foundation for any detection dog with our comprehensive overview of odor imprinting.

You will explore scent imprinting, how to shape a clear indication, and how to use back-chaining to create precise and consistent alert behavior. We explain the different phases of odor imprinting so you understand how to progress from basic to advanced levels. Essential odor hygiene principles are included to prevent contamination and maintain training quality.

It’s all about the search

Everyone trains their dog to find, but the real progress comes from understanding how to reward the search behaviour itself. In this webinar, we explore how an interval-based reward system can build motivation and precision, how strategic odor placement shapes the dog’s decision-making, and how structured training schedules support consistent progress. We also address common false-indication errors and explain how to prevent them through clear criteria and well-timed reinforcement. This session gives handlers and instructors practical tools to strengthen search behaviour at every level.

The nose calibration

For detection dogs and tracking/trailing dogs.In this webinar, we will dive into The Nose Calibration — the process of calibrating the dog’s nose before operational work begins. A properly calibrated nose determines the reliability, accuracy, and stability of every search, both in detection and in scent-tracking disciplines.

Working with Conservation & Anti-Poaching Dogs

The webinar will be presented by: Wesley Visscher (Scent Imprint Conservation Dogs) and Mike Veale (Global Conservation Force)

During this session, Wesley and Mike will take you inside their work as entrepreneurs, instructors and project leaders within conservation and anti-poaching programmes worldwide. They will share real-world field experience, provide insight into their projects, mission and objectives, and demonstrate how dogs are operationally deployed in the fight against poaching and wildlife crime. The presentation will be supported by visual material from the field.
